President, Mr. Lionel Herath’s Message at the 35th Annual General Meeting
It is with immense pride and heartfelt gratitude that I share this message on the occasion of the 35th Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka Tea Factory Owners Association (SLTFOA). As the foremost representative body of the Private Tea Manufacturing sector in Sri Lanka, SLTFOA has, since its inception in 1990, remained steadfast in its commitment to the growth, sustainability, and advancement of the tea industry.
For more than three decades, SLTFOA has earned the trust and respect of government authorities, local bodies, and industry professionals. We have consistently worked to drive progress and foster innovation within the tea manufacturing sector, which today processes 70% of Sri Lanka’s national tea production. Our association has been a trusted voice advocating for industry-forward policies while ensuring that our members have the tools and support, they need to thrive.
On the economic front, SLTFOA continues to advocate for favourable policy reforms and infrastructure development to support the uninterrupted operations of its members. Socially, we have empowered over 500,000 smallholder farmers by providing resources for sustainable practices, indirectly benefiting nearly two million people, and contributing to broader community development. SLTFOA’s commitment to industry growth strengthens both economic and social fabric of Sri Lanka’s tea sector.
However, we face serious challenges. The Sri Lankan tea industry has seen a sharp decline in productivity, with output falling from 350 million kilograms in 2013 to just 262 million kilograms by 2024. A major factor behind this decline is the lack of replanting and infilling efforts. In response to this pressing issue, SLTFOA has engaged the services of Nidek Consultancy (Pvt) Ltd to initiate a comprehensive national strategy aimed at revitalizing the sector. This initiative emphasizes the replacement of aged and unproductive tea bushes with high yielding, appropriate cultivars and improved extension services delivered via our extensive factory network. This program provides financial assistance, technical training, and enhanced planting materials, aiming to uplift smallholders and ensure long-term sustainability and prosperity in the sector.
As we commemorate this milestone, I extend my heartfelt thanks to the past Chairmen, the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and our committed membership. I am particularly thankful to the Secretary General and Secretariat staff, whose diligent work has been invaluable in supporting my role as Chairman.
I also extend my warmest gratitude to the Organizing Committee of this AGM and our valued sponsors for making this event a success.
Let us move forward together with renewed energy, determined to uplift our industry and the lives it supports.
